4 Types of Laser-assisted Power Correction Treatment

PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy):

This procedure gently removes the top layer of the cornea, called the epithelium. After that, an Excimer laser (193 nm wavelength) is used to reshape the cornea, correcting the eye's focusing power. A contact lens is placed on the eye for a few days to help with healing. The epithelium is very thin (about 50 microns) and usually grows back within 3 days.

Lasik (Flap-based Procedure):

This is a common procedure where a thin flap (100-120 microns thick) is made in the top layer of the cornea. The flap can be created in two ways:

  • Microkeratome: A small blade is used to cut the flap at the right depth. This method is called BLADE LASIK.
  • Femtosecond Laser (1053 nm): This laser precisely creates the flap at the desired depth. It is different from the Excimer laser used in other treatments and requires a separate machine. This method is called FEMTO-LASIK.
Once the flap is made using either method, it is lifted, and the underlying layer is reshaped with the Excimer laser (the same laser used in PRK). Afterward, the flap is placed back on the cornea, and the patient is given medication before being discharged.

Smile Pro:

SMILE Pro (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction) is a minimally invasive laser eye surgery used to correct vision problems such as nearsightedness (myopia) and astigmatism. Here's how it works:

  • A femtosecond laser is used to create a small, lens-shaped piece of tissue (called a lenticular) inside the cornea.
  • Through a tiny incision (2-4 mm), the surgeon removes the lenticule. This reshapes the cornea, allowing the eye to focus light correctly, improving vision.
  • The procedure does not require a large corneal flap like in LASIK, making it less invasive with faster healing.
SMILE Pro is known for its quick recovery, reduced risk of dry eye, and precision, making it a popular choice for those looking to correct their vision without the use of glasses or contact lenses.

ICL:

SMILE Pro (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction) is a minimally invasive laser eye surgery used to correct vision problems such as nearsightedness (myopia) and astigmatism. Here's how it works:ICL (Implantable Contact Lens) is a popular alternative to LASIK and other vision correction surgeries because it involves placing a removable lens inside the eye. Here are some reasons why people choose ICL:

  • Accurate Results: ICL has been proven to give excellent results for vision correction.
  • Improved Night Vision: Many patients experience better night vision after the procedure.
  • Effective for High Near-sightedness: It provides clear, sharp vision and is especially helpful for correcting severe near-sightedness.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the recovery time after Smile Pro?

TRecovery after SMILE eye surgery typically involves an initial blurry vision for 24 hours, significant improvement within a week, and full healing takes 3 to 6 months, with careful adherence to post-operative care.

Is Smile pro the same as a smile?

SMILE Pro is an advanced version of the original SMILE procedure, featuring faster laser technology and quicker recovery times while maintaining similar surgical principles and methods.

Are there any side effects of Smile Pro?

Common side effects of SMILE Pro include glare, halos around lights, dry eyes, inflammation, and debris at the tissue removal site, though these effects are typically temporary.

What is the cost of Smile Pro?

The average cost of Smile Pro eye surgery in India is around ₹1,50,000 for both eyes but at Innocent Hearts Eye Centre Jalandhar, the cost starts from ₹60,000 to ₹75,000.

Is Smile Pro suited for Dry Eyes?

Yes, SMILE Pro is well-suited for patients with dry eyes, as it minimizes the risk of inducing dry eye syndrome and preserves corneal nerves better than traditional LASIK.

What are the benefits of SMILE pro?

The benefits of SMILE Pro include a small incision that reduces the risk of infection, faster recovery times, minimal discomfort, improved night vision, lower likelihood of dry eyes, and enhanced precision due to advanced laser technology.

Is Smile Pro Safer Than Lasik?

SMILE Pro is generally considered safer than LASIK because it eliminates the need for a corneal flap, resulting in less risk of complications such as dry eyes and flap-related issues, while also promoting faster recovery and maintaining corneal stability.

Is smile pro better than trans-prk, femto lasik or Contoura vision?

SMILE Pro generally offers faster recovery and less discomfort compared to TransPRK, Femto LASIK, and Contoura Vision, but the best choice depends on individual eye conditions and needs.
